Building a Retail Renovation

| This project was to have been a renovation of a rather nasty existing retail site in San Fransisco. The building sits behind a parking lot whose limits are defined by rising concrete retaining walls and an assortment of neighboring fences. My solution was to wrap the entire site with a nest of horizontal fence boards. The fence unifies the space, and provides a branding and signage function along the narrow street approach from either direction. The center third of the building elevation is built out with a glass box that projects up and back into the building as a clerestory that organizes the retail space inside. Sadly for me the client's business model precludes that which I think is great, so the design exists only in the cyberspace. |
