Anyone needing to understand the whole magazine cover outrage can do no better than watch the Daily Show's twin montages of first cable news outlets decrying its offensiveness then second those same outlets advancing all the idiocy caricatured therein. For me, the worst part about the cover is that it gives all the assholes who participated in those ludicrous, fear-mongering, 'news stories' about Obama a chance to pretend that they never would do such a thing.

Which made me pay too close attention to Colbert. He interviewed someone from the Council on Foreign Relations. When talk turned to Brazil, she bemoaned now that Brazil has discovered some billion barrels of oil, they will be even less inclined to do whatever the U.S. tells them. Is that the extend of diplomacy as the CFR sees it? "Hey you, do what we say or we'll bury you! Oh crap, they have a measure of independence and can't be bullied? I'm out of ideas..."

Also, this, and especially the first two comments at the bottom.
